Gramedia/GPU commenced full activity in 1974, although the first title appeared in 1973. As a general publisher, we publish a wide range of titles which become more varied over the years. Besides our original titles, we are open to foreign copyrights in order to produce new titles by means of translation and adaptation. We have established cooperation with more than 200 overseas literary agents and publishers.
Nowadays our publications cover children's books - fiction and nonfiction, teenage books, novels, graphic novels, books on Indonesian language and literature, English Language Teaching books, dictionaries, cookbooks as well as books on history, sociology, philosophy, politics, health, interior design, fashion and self-help. We have also created new fiction genres, teenlit and metropop, which have turned out to be best sellers. Annually we publish around 800 titles, half of which are translations. Elex was founded in 1985, with the intention to anticipate the development of technology. In the beginning Elex published books on computer and electronics as well as periodicals. Based on the development and market demand, Elex started to publish Japanese manga and made them quite popular nationwide simultaneously with Indonesian comics.
Besides manga and computer books, we publish books on management, children books, software and multimedia. To supply software, we set up a specific unit that develops software in line with multimedia technology. This unit is designed to maintain educational software and develop electronic publishing. PT GRAMEDIA WIDIASARANA INDONESIA (Grasindo)
1990 saw the establishment of Grasindo, coincident with the establishment of the Indonesian National Act on Education System. In this light, Grasindo was ready to participate in the process of educational service industry. At first the publication comprised mainly textbooks for kindergarten, elementary school, high school and university students.
With the growing needs of teaching and educational materials, we have been developing series on traditional folktales, children songs by prominent Indonesian composers, children games and how-to-books for children. m&c! started back in the 1980-ies as Komik Majalah, publishing various titles licensed from several overseas publishers.
